Chikankari – Some interesting facts:

Chikankari derives its name from the Persian word Chikin or Chikeen meaning embroidered cloth. The Mughal Emperor Jehangir’s queen Noor-Jahan made this type of embroidery popular. Owing its roots to the Mughal courts, chikankari embroidery was made famous and adopted widely by Lucknow’s craftsmen, connoisseurs and entrepreneurs for its exquisite beauty. The golden period for Awadhi culture started when Nawab Asif-ud-daula shifted his capital from Faizabad to Lucknow in 1775. In the next 80 years, Awadh saw the blooming of art and culture in its domains. Much before the exile of the last NawabWajid Ali Shah to Kolkata, the city of Lucknow had already earned the title of “Paris of the Orient”. Chikankari embroidery was mainly accomplished on fine and sometimes on sheer fabrics like Muslin (malmal), Cambric (addhi), glazed cambric (tanzeb) and occasionally silk which were found appropriate for chikankari. The Calcutta International Exhibition of 1883-84 and “The Indian and colonial exhibition of 1886” were the landmark international trade fairs due to which the Universal demand for chikankari gained momentum.
